Some kind and well-meaning soul in Peru has decided to sing the praises of… well, something — spam is so abstract these days — to the world, using a number of made-up darklooks.com email addresses in the “From” header. Swine. This means that thousands of well-meaning people keep telling me I’ve sent spam, or that they’re out of the office. Today, about 1700 of them did so.
Of course, I’ve been merrily telling people for weeks “oh, anything at darklooks.com will reach me”. So what I’m doing now is redirecting any address the spammers have used to that marvellous thing, /dev/null. This still leaves me open to abuse of other addresses at this domain, so I guess the ultimate solution (if they don’t just leave me alone and get bored) will be to ignore all mail to the domain unless it’s to exactly my address. Not doing it yet though, as it’s kind of a shame; spammers ruin the internet once again. And there was me thinking I’d never tire of being addressed as poo at darklooks.
I’m mildly surprised (given that spoofing of the from address is unutterably easy and incredibly common) that people still bounce messages they themselves have already IDd as spam to the putative sender. Ah well. Go figure.
